How to Store Ink Cartridges Properly to Prevent Drying Out
Published: May 20, 2026
Ink cartridges drying out is one of the most common—and costly—problems for print shops and office users. When cartridges sit unused, ink can evaporate, clog printheads, and render the cartridge useless. Proper storage keeps ink fresh, prevents clogging, and protects your investment.
Best Practices for Ink Cartridge Storage
1. Keep Cartridges Sealed Until Use
- Leave cartridges in their original airtight packaging until you’re ready to install.
- The seal prevents air exposure, which causes ink evaporation and drying.
2. Store in a Cool, Dry Place
- Ideal temperature: 10–30°C (50–86°F)
- Avoid direct sunlight, heaters, or humid areas (bathrooms, basements).
- High heat speeds up drying; humidity can damage internal components.
3. Store Upright (Never on Side or Upside Down)
- Keep cartridges vertical, same as installed in the printer.
- This prevents ink from settling unevenly, leaking, or drying at the nozzle.
4. Avoid Extreme Temperature Swings
- Rapid changes (hot → cold) cause condensation and ink separation.
- Keep cartridges in a stable environment year-round.
5. Use Within Recommended Shelf Life
- Most ink cartridges last 12–24 months unopened.
- Follow FIFO (First-In, First-Out)—use older stock first.
6. For Partially Used Cartridges
- If removed from the printer, seal the nozzle with tape or a cartridge cap.
- Store upright in a cool place; reinstall within 1–2 weeks for best results.
Why Proper Storage Matters
Dry cartridges lead to:
- Printhead clogs and damage
- Faded, streaky prints
- Wasted ink and costly replacements
- Unplanned downtime
